The concept worked just the way Hubert envi sioned it, and pretty soon there were traffic circles all over Sumeria. Hubert designed each one with specified entrances and exits and posted big black-on-yellow arrows to make sure everybody went the same way. He also suggested the radical idea that drivers keep to one side of the road on straightaways, greatly reducing head-on collisions.

Of course, even with the new rules and regulations, there was still the occasional fender bender. After several accidents involving small children driving large carts, Hubert came up with the idea of driver's licenses, which could only be held by those aged sixteen or older. When the Queen asked him how he had arrived at that specific number, he explained that sixteen was the numerological equivalent of the name "Eridu" when calculated in the Phrygian system and divided by two.

"Splendid," she said, never suspecting the real reason: Hubert had just celebrated his sixteenth birthday.

Gorp was, as usual, the lone holdout against all this progress. He refused to use the traffic circles and went out of his way to avoid them. His relationship with Hubert became increasingly distant. Their dinner conversation pretty much consisted of "Pass the pita" and "Are you going to finish that eel?"

They were father and son in name only. Or would have been, if they'd had last names.
